Powerball
Powerball is one of South Africa’s most popular lottery games and has the highest minimum guaranteed jackpot.
Powerball draws take place twice weekly on Tuesdays and Fridays at 21:00 local time. Ticket sales close 30 minutes before the draw and reopen after the result has been published.
Entry into Powerball costs ZAR 5.00.
To play, choose five main numbers between 1 and 50, plus a Powerball number between 1 and 20. Players can manually select their own numbers or go for a Quick Pick for randomly generated numbers.
Powerball PLUS is available for an extra ZAR 2.50. This option enters the same numbers into a second draw for a chance to win a range of cash prizes.
Players who enter Powerball via certain Lottery Agent websites can also select System Entry to increase their chances of winning.
Jackpot
Powerball has a minimum guaranteed jackpot of ZAR 3 million.
Powerball has unlimited rollovers and does not have a jackpot cap.
The biggest ever Powerball jackpots are:
- ZAR 232 million on February 19, 2019.
- ZAR 114.2 million on November 26, 2019.
- ZAR 102 million on June 3, 2011.

Payout and Taxes
Powerball prize winners have up to 365 days to make a claim, with unclaimed prizes being split 50/50 between the prize pool and subsequent donations to good causes.
Powerball jackpot prizes are always paid out as lump sums only. Lottery winnings in South Africa are not subject to taxation.
Players who enter Powerball from abroad should also check local tax laws to find out if they need to declare winnings at home.
